Swabbie Kit

$ 124.99

Here it is...the long awaited DIY skimmer neck cleaner!

Yes, it really is pretty easy to put one together.  With our newly designed shaft seal and motor assembly, the You-Built Swabbie goes together with basic tools (small flathead screwdriver and pliers) and common supplies (silicone or hot glue).  We include the required acrylic solvent needed to bond the motor assembly's components inside the housing.

The motor housing bonds to your skimmer's lid after a simple modification.  See photo instruction manuals below.

Depending on the diameter of your skimmer's neck or riser tube, choose the appropriate blade size as shown in the diagram to the left.

Also available in 220v for non-North American countries.

DIY swabbie

Been working great for 2 weeks and no skimmer cleaning! Components all seem good quality and easy to assemble. The instructions on the website could use some help. There is a lot of reading between the lines and the steps are not very clear. Found a YouTube video from another ****** that helped a lot. The Avast support line was helpful and fast too. Avast should make a YouTube video. Took about an hour to assemble and install on skimmer not including dry times. I thought the squeegee would inhibit the foam head, but doesn't at all. If anything, increases skimmer performance considerably since it's always clean. You'll definitely want a skimmate locker after this!

Worked as advertised, but needs improvement

The unit is easy to install and worked as advertised. But there are minor issues that could be improved. The base plate as three tabs with holes, presumably to allow screw attachment to the top of skimmer instead of hard cement. But no screws are provided. In this wet environment, plastic screw should be used. Furthermore, the wiper arm is attached using a metal screw. I can imagine that not too long in the future, it will corrode and break and contaminate the water. Perhaps other user who used this longer can chime in.

Avast Marine Works

The metal hardware is 316L Stainless steel, it is 100% corrosion resistant in Saltwater, no worries there. The Swabbie can be bolted to the lid but drilling and tapping all those holes so everything aligns perfectly is beyond what we consider appropriate for a DIY kit, we provide instructions on how to simply glue it on with only drilling one hole and provide the center finding jig to assist. Thanks for the feedback!

Size measurement slightly off - DIY needed

The squeegee dimensions for the small was slightly too big by approximately 1/8” than what was posted on the website. Some sanding of the acrylic material was required for the squeegee to fit. I initially flipped the blade so the squeegee fit, but the plastic pins made the rubber bow out and caused the blade to wipe unevenly. My best guess is that the rubber blade was cut a little big, because I spoke with Avast over the phone and they said they have made thousands of these with the same dimensions. After a little extra and unexpected DIY the swabbie works pretty well. I have this on a smart plug to run twice a day for 1 minute. My only recommendation would be to include a quick disconnect, waterproof, 3 pin connector to make it easier for maintenance and maybe a small led light to show that the squeegee is running and as a bit of added geek factor.
